Like those inane fucking magnetic" ribbons that people stick to their cars. The men and women of our Army fought and died to wear that logo and indicia. My father was in the 101st airborne attached to the 1st Infantry in Vietnam. He came home with metal pins for shins and a screwed up back from his service to his country and the Army. And THIS is how the Department of the Army repays him and the many thousands of others like him for his sacrifice? By selling his unit name and reputation to the highest bidder so that they can have underpaid Chinese kids make cheap, shoddy activewear to sell to retarded Suburban families that think that they are somehow "SUPPORTING THE TROOPS" by buying army clothes and sticking magnets to their giant gas-gizzling SUV's?! GAH!!

Sears and the Army defends this reprehensible act of selling out our Soldiers by saying, "The licensing fee is to go toward programs that benefit army personnel and their families." Really? Well, what about the thousands of vets that served under the banner of the BIG RED ONE? I guess since the DOA decommissioned the 1UD in 2006, thsoe vets don't see a damned dime, do they? What about the profits from the sales of merchandise? The licensing fee is great, but I think that if the Sears Corporation is going to make money on the backs of our Soldiers, then they should kick into the Army's coffers. Maybe they should use the money to help fund the VA programs that are seriously lacking any financial assistance from the Bush Administration. I know my dad could use some money to help pay for his prescriptions and medical bills (prescriptions that SHOULD be paid by the VA, but for some reason aren't), why doesn't SEARS give him some of the cash they're going to make on this?

Representative John Murtha (D) has come out against this. Many others are sure to as well. This is bottom-line a cheap marketing ploy to raise enlistment numbers, most likely engineered at the highest echelons of the Army, Pentagon and White House. And We must find a way to stop this disgusting example of corruption and keep these people from making more money off our soldier's sacrifice.

“As people do better, they vote Republican - unless they have too much education and vote Democratic"- Karl Rove

This is in response to the recent McCain-Palin Smear campaign against Barack Obama's use of the old adage "You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still just a pig."

This is just the sort of hit and run politics I'd expect.... FROM MCCAIN, PALIN and ROVE. McCain himself has used this EXACT PHRASE in reference to Hillary CLinton. Where's the outrage? Where's the blind hysteria and animosity toward McCain? "But he's a WAR HERO," you say? SO What? So that means that he can say whatever he wants with impunity? I call Shenanigans. This just proves how very desperate the McCain campaign is to keep this campaign off of the issues. Issues we, the American Public, very desperately need to hear them talk about. But all the GOP kool-aid drinkers will, of course, focus on the inconsequential crap that McCain and his "Truth Squads" feed them. That's how the 'pubs under Rove win elections. They don't debate the issues, they make up personal attacks turn the Election into a giant flame war. they just keep fanning the flames until all the Pubic sees is the smoke that clouds the mind from the TRUTH. Why won't you people wake up and look through the haze of lies and deception that they keep putting around you.

All of you people who say "Lipstick has taken on a new meaning in the past 2 weeks," I say to you, WHAT?! Are you freaking kidding me? What the hell are you talking about?

Take off the blinders that the GOP and the Media put on you and actually look LOOK at these candidates. Don't be misled by party rhetoric, don't prove Rove right and just follow blindly the person who attacks the hardest. Karl Rove once said that if he can't beat someone by attacking their weakness, then he will attack their strengths. This is what the McCain camp is doing. They can't actually attack Obama on the facts and his positions and his inexperience, so they'll attack him on his character. Don't let them fool you!!!

Life always sucks. All of those posts will be at my new blog: www.monkeyminionpress.blogspot.com. And it will be moved to my website soon. Does that date down there really say OCTOBER?! Cheez and Crackers! What HAVE I been up to? Well, since you asked, (or more accurately, didn't) I'll tell you.

Since my last post, I've been busy, busy, busy; busily working on a new item from the twisted minds at Monkey Minion Press, ZOMBIE GREETING CARDS!! Some of my closest family and friends have already recieved the prototype Christmas-themed cards, but next up: Valentine's Day! WOOO! I'm pretty Jazzed by this. According to my friend, Shawn at Spazdog Comics (without whom, this would never be happening, I'm sure), we've got some comic shops lined up and ready to sell these in their stores. HOW COOL IS THAT?
Here are a couple of samples (unfinished versions, because i'm lame and haven't put updated versions on the intarwebz).

More big news in the world of Dane: I've been accepted as a sketch card artist on the upcoming MARVEL MASTERPIECES 2008 card set! Again, totally awesome! I'm totally psyched about it! I'll be doing 200 cards for the set. So, order your boxes early!

Unfortunately, all this great news has a sad undercurrent: with all that's going on now, work on our upcoming children's book, Zombies in the Yard, has stalled. Once things quiet down, however, I promise that I'll be back on it faster than goose shit slides through a tin horn.

Phoenix Comicon is coming up soon! January 26 & 27, so if you're in the area stop on by! This will be the con that takes my Artist Alley Virginity, as I'll be manning a table with my good friend, David Rabbitte, and sitting next to my lovely wife, Ashlie. It'll be a good time, even if you don't spend all your time at my table. They've got some awesome guests lined up, like Lou Ferrigno, Jeph Loeb, Ed McGuinness, Don Rosa, Steve Rude, David Finch, Tom Hodges, Jeremy Bulloch (Boba Fett), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), Walter Koenig (Ensign Chekov of Star Trek Fame), and lots of others. Here's a print I recently finished, to go with mt "Girls of Gotham" set, Harley Quinn!

Okay, enough with the hocking of wares, already! I suck. I just realized that it's been more than two months since I last updated this here blog. Sorry to anyone who might've been waiting.

So, "What have I been up to", you wonder? Well, with Phoenix Comicon coming up, I've been crazy busy making art, getting stuff ready, etc. I've also still been working with Steve Rude, just got the remastered Nexus: Origin graphic novel done, so that's that. Also, I just got back from a business trip to the Cayman Islands (I love my job, sometimes). That was a blast. Got to do some snorkeling and swam with some stingrays, too. (But no Steve Irwin action, so that's good.)

So, what kind of art have I been up to? Well, I've been doing prints for my table at PCC. Things like this:

And in addition to those and various sketchcards I've been doing, I got my website up! www.monkeyminionpress.com

So, I've been a bit busy. Also, Ash and I are writing a book, but we're having issues finding a place to print it. If anyone knows of a good book printer that's print wire-bound, journal style books, let us know.

Well, that's all the time I have for now. I spoke to him infrequently through his forum at CBR and here. I never got the opportunity to see him at a con. But, like so many here, I loved Mike’s artwork. I discovered his work on Sensational Spider-Man back during the clone saga, and was hooked. I’ve read (if not bought) everything he’s done since.I read his blog for inspiration almost daily. It was truly inspiring to see such a master working through & solving some of the same problems a lowly newbie artist confronts on a daily basis. He always seemed happy to post in this blog. And we were all happy to read it.

I wish that I could have told him in person what an inspiration he was and continues to be. To me and apparently to a lot of people from around the world.

I’d like to offer my condolences to the family, friends and people like me who never met Mike, but still lost an inspiration.

Mike, you will be missed. May the winds be with you, wherever you go.

Dane"

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://dreamindex.blogspot.com/2007/08/mike-wieringo-rip-june-24-1963-august.html' title='Mike Wieringo - RIP. But I'm back.
for now.

San Diego comic-con is just next week! W00t!!!! I can't wait. This year we're leaving a day early to take in some of SD's sights. It's gonna be awesome. Not much new to report in my life. Work, work, work. So, as I like to tell my wife, just a quick in and out today.

new art!!!
First up is a Wonder Woman piece I did for an art trade in San Diego. The girl I did it for LOVES WW, so here she is saving the girl's cat. Oh, whoa-whoa, oh whoa. - Tom Jones

So, how's it hangin'? I've managed to miss a whole month of blogging and yet haven't missed that much. So what's new with me? Not much. I recently took on a part-time non-paid gig helping Steve Rude (creator of Nexus and all around comic art god) with some photoshop work on the Nexus Archives vol. 6. Which is pretty cool. My wife's not as happy about it as I am, since it takes my days off, and a lot of gas, but this is kind of a once-in-a-lifetime kind of gig. I can't pass this up.

What else? I saw Spider-Man 3 on opening night. Ugh. It was not as good as advertised. They tried to cram WAAAAY too much into a 2 hour film. You can tell where they spent the special effects budget, because Venom and Sandman looked great, but the fight scenes looked very much like a video Game. I liked the Sandman character in the movie much more than the comic version, just like doc ock in the 2nd movie, but I wish they'd have just left Venom out. Raimi does a great job with the "Science Project Gone Wrong" characters, why muck with that? And seeing venom onscreen just served to illustrate how weak a character he really is. I mean, yeah you can say he's crazy, and what not, but his major motivation? Peter Parker proved that he photoshopped a picture. OOOOOH, bad Peter, now he's gotta die. What? The last fight scene was cool, but a bit gratuitous. It just felt like they needed some way to redeem the Harry character after 2 movies worth of pouting and sulking. And then they kill him. How retarded is that? And when Pete gets the Black Symbiote, he gets all emo. I hate emo-kids anyway, but to make my favorite superhero into one? Ugh. And don't even get me started on emo-Pete's "Saturday Night Fever" homage complete with light disco soundtrack. All-in-All i'd give Spider-man 3 a 6 out of 10. See it, but don't pay full price.

I don't really have any new art to show, unfortunately. This gig with Steve and my recent move has really eaten my available art time, but I do have a couple cards to show from a month or so ago.

Dr. Doom

Boba Fett

As always, Thanks for checkin' back.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://dreamindex.blogspot.com/2007/05/whats-new-pussycat-oh-whoa-whoa-oh-whoa.html' title='What's New, Pussycat? The American's Opinion. Someone else's views on life, the war, the "President", cars, drunks, grocery, shopping, on and on and so forth. People want to share their views with the people in their immediate vicinity, and they think you should care (unlike me, who shares his opinion with the world, and only expect you to care if you navigate to my blog on accident). Well guess what? I DON'T CARE!!!! I don't care what you think about the drunk old bum that just puked on himself in the parking lot. I don't care that you think that President Shrub is doing a bang-up job in Iraq, and wish he could be made emperor. I DON'T CARE that you think the world is going down the tubes, and you think the gays are to blame. JUST SHUT UP!!!! Jebas Christman. Another thing; when you're in public, do you really need to take your 50 fuckin' kids that you can't controlwith you? With that many kids, one of them should be old enough to watch the others. LEAVE THEM HOME! There's a reason more and more people are refusing to have children, and it's people like you. These little heathen rugrats running around like they are possessed by a rabid, psychotic Robin Williams, speaking in tongues and jumping on washing machines, scare people off having children and it's ALL YOUR FAULT! Keep them on a leash.

Oh, how I long for the days when you could hit your kids in public without the shameful looks and the calls to the police. Sometimes a kid needs a little violence to readjust his outlook on the world. Or when you could go out to the store without having to hear some inbred, ignoramus' views on life, the universe & everthing. Our Society is so screwed up nowadays & everybody believes that everyone opinion matters (it doesn't) and "Spare the rod; Spoil the child," is just an old home-ism that should be forgotten for some PC ninny B.S. that says that hitting children damages their self-esteem (so do losing & learning, so we get rid of scoreboards on baseball and football fields & we put our children in school for less & less time per day, and then we can't give them F's when its apparent that the only thing they're learning in school is how to anchor a desk to the ground, because our teachers are hamstrung & handcuffed to a retarded man's plan to reform our schools by making teachers teach a test instead of the subject they were hired and trained to teach.) Oh well. Welcome to America, I suppose.

Ok, whew! Art Time:

SO, I've been doing alot of sketchcards recently, but I think I'll show you some of my recent computer ilustrations:

These are for a new story I'm developing, called the War for OZ. It's basically a reimagining of the Oz story told as a war story. I'm still working out the kinks in the story itself, so I can't share that here, but here's some art anyway.

Thanks for swinging by. As you may remember from back in September, I was on staff for last year's con. Well, this year, not so much. Which was AWESOME!! This meant that I got to do all the stuff you go to a comicon to do: Stand in line,
buy things, win things and get autographs. I got to hang out with some cool people, met a few cool people and by virtue of the fact that I was on staff last year, got to see some of the behind the scenes stuff most people don't get to see. It was great. I actually got a major geek moment, and while I'm looking forward to SDCC in July, I don't know how it'll top this:

I got to hang out with comics legend, George Perez.

Here's the lowdown:

On Sunday morning, I met with my friend Gareth at the Con, at the art contest he runs for the con. He tells me that he's on his way over to the vendor room to check his tickets. "What tickets?" I ask. He proceeds to tell me that the Hero Initiative was holding a raffle where you could win a sketch from Mr. George Perez, by donating $50 to the charity, and the drawing was at 11:00 am. (This was at 10:45am.) So, I begged my wife to let me enter the raffle, and we bought 6 tickets (at $1 a piece). 11:00 rolls around and they start the drawing. 7 people are called 6 people claim their place in line. They had one more slot to fill, so they call off the final number, and guess who's holding it in their hot little hand? Yeah, ME! W00t! So we fork over our $50 and are told by Brian Pulido to come back later today to retreive our sketch. Cool beans. So, I go to the AZCBA table, to set up my sketching for charity thing, and am joined by indy comic renaissance man, Craig DeBoard. We do the sketch thing for a couple of hours, during which I do about 15 sketches and gain $24 for the charity. Not bad for 2 hours worth of work, and Ashlie and I hit the vendor floor again. We get some sketches from Tony Parker (who is awesome, BTW), Daniel Davis, Arthur Suydam, Marat Mychaels, Matt Haley, Phil Hester, Bret Blevins, M. Alice LeGrow, Tess Fowler, Todd Nauck, Tone Rodriguez and James Owen. And we run into David Rabbitte (also a really cool dude) on the floor, and talk to him a bit. We then figure let's check in on our Perez Sketch. So we amble on over to the Hero Booth to see that George is still about 2 sketches ahead of ours, and make it just in time to see Gareth's daughter, Cammie posing for her sketch of Raven from the Teen Titans, (which was totally cute,) so we go to a panel. Well we got back in time to see George finish the sketch before ours and start ours. So, we start talking to George and Brian and ask if it's OK to take a picture of him drawing my sketch. He said it was cool, so we did. Brian decides to do us one better, tho. He has me come sit next to George behind the table while he's working and tells me, "What's the one question that you've always wanted to ask George or any comic professional?" Me being the uncreative sot that I am, ask "How'd you get into the business?" To which George replies, "Through the Skylight." We all have a bit of a laugh, and chat a little about art techniques and tricks, until George finishes my drawing. I was beaming for the next week about that. Not many people get to sit and talk to one of their Idols like they matter, and that was exactly what happened to me. SO, I gotta thank Brian and George for being awesome, and the current PCC staff for bringing me this major geek moment.

And now Pics!!

George & I before he started drawing.

George drawing my Thor sketch

Me sitting with George Perez while he's drawing my Thor Sketch. Just what we need; more targets for the Iraqi militants. To date, we've lost 3,017 troops, and more than 47,000 have been wounded, some of those maimed so badly they can no longer live a normal life. And for what? Every reason we've been given for as to why we are in Iraq has been proven false, and yet we can't leave. Our "president" (notice the lower case 'p')has decided that we have to win. WHAT IS WINNING? Considering the fact that we have no clear goal or exit strategy, we can't win. We have the greatest, most efficient military in the World, but even they have to be given a goal. What is their goal now, SURVIVE? That's not winning? How do you win a war against an entire country of people that hate you? A country that the more "enemies" we kill, the more sprout up? We'll be there forever, locked in stalemate, us killing them, them killing us, until one of our countries falls completely. And then what? No, the only way for us to get out is to cut our losses & leave. We can't win in Iraq short of killing the entire country. And that's not a win. And even if they decide on a goal, it's hard to call it a win when we keep losing troops to a war that should have never been fought.

And what about Afghanistan? The Taliban is actually coming back. And we're allowing them, because all of our troops are in Iraq. The pressure's been taken off Afghanistan, Osama Bin Laden hasn't been found or killed. And the Taliban is gaining power again. But, THAT doesn't matter. I guess we need another attack, but that will make us attack someone else, I suppose. Ugh.

Well, art! So, I've been selling some art on eBay to save up some money for atrip back to see my family in MO. Mostly Lord of the Rings & Star Wars sketch cards, so that's what I have to show you.

“Man was made at the end of the week's work, when God was tired” - Mark Twain

Bah. There's only us." - Bill Clinton

Well, fuck. i was originally gonna write about the US midterm elections but, I got busy, and forgot to. And now, it's almost Thanksgiving, and the election's so far gone, I'm out of a topic to write about. Meh.

Well, not completely. A couple of weeks ago, the Arizona Comic Book Association held a charity sketch drive at a local comic shop, Spazdog Comics. It was fun, I met a lot of really great people, drew my fingers off, and we raised a total of $102.50 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and then our host, Shawn at Spazdog matched it giving us a total of $205.00!! And it got me thinking. We're coming into the holiday season, the season of giving and of taking. As Americans, we don't celebrate the holidays for the reason they were instituted for the most part. Which is fine by me, since as you may know, I'm NOT a religious person. I don't celebrate Christmas to commemorate the birth of Jesus, I celebrate for family and happiness. I love giving presents to people I care about. I hate the commercialization of the season. I hate that this Friday, little old ladies will be beating each up other to get the last fucking Elmo doll or DVD player at Wal*Mart. I hate that TV channels are showing toy commercials to teach the little kids that mommy and daddy must give you the super-flashy-bomb toy for Spendmas™, or you just aren't as special as the kids who have gotten one. The holidays have become more about who can spend more money than who rather than about spending time with family, celebrating togetherness, and giving. So, I'm imploring you to give. Give some canned food to the food pantry, give a toy to the local Toys for Tots, when you pass the old man with the bell on the way into Wal*Mart, give him a dollar. Just give. No matter how bad off you are, there's probably someone worse off than you. It'll make you feel better, it'll make someone's life a bit better, and it'll help make the World a better place to live.

Art Time!!! what do I have for you today? Let's See.... how about a t-shirt design?
As you may know, I'm starting a new Cafepress shop called Monkey Minion Press. so, I've been working on new designs for t-shirts around the clock. Here are a couple of designs from the initial batch:

Let Me know what you think by clicking on the cafepress link on the sidebar--->
and buying some shirts or magnets!

Peace out until next time! Welcome back. I know I promised to unravel the mysteries of pie this time, but I can't. It's flaky, crusty, filled to the brim with all manner of fruity goodness is unfathomable by the human mind. I have failed.

On to today's quote. By the last legally elected American President. Why is this relevant you ask? Well, because this past week, I had the opportunity to listen to this man speak. He hasn't lost his shine. Charming, homey, polite and downright charismatic, he was and still is the epitome of Presidential. He was in town at ASU to stump for Congressional candidates Harry Mitchell and Jim Pederson. His speaking skills far overshadowed the guys he was here for, tho. But, Jim used that to his advantage, and kept his speech short. Everyone else, sadly, didn't. Oh well. I wasn't there for them anyway. If it weren't for the small technicality that Clintonisn't running for anything, I'd vote for him.

It struck me to think that most of the kids he was speaking to probably couldn't remember his first election. I was in 6th grade, but I remember. But they were as rabid for him as any lifelong Democrat. You'll see it in the video. I took two videos of the speech, forgive the shakiness, but I was holding the camera up by hand, and trying to hold it above the crowd. Unfortunately, one video is too long, so I'll have edit it down before I can show you. Here's one video, tho.

No art today. I never thought that I'd use a George Bush Quote in my blog. Color me stupefied. Of course, the fact that this particular quote is so stupid that it makes me giggle like a Japanese anime schoolgirl being molested by a 6 foot tall tentacle monter, is irrelevant. I think.

So, welcome back. I just re-read last week's post, and wow. Talk about the rantings of a mad man... Let me summarize for you: Civil War, BAD. There ya go. All questions answered.

So, I went in for my routine checkup this past week. The first one I've had since before college. Almost 7 years ago. It was pretty good. I learned that I am fantastically healthy (low blood pressure, excellent pulse rate, reflexes and joints are good. etc.), except for one, teeny-tiny little thing....

I'm fat.

Now, I'm not like Weird Al "Fat" video fat, I'm not even Sylvester Stallone in Copland fat. I'm just kind overweight, heavier than I really should be, given my family's medical history. I knew that I'd been letting myself go a bit, since I don't do any exercise. (I'm kinda like a poster-child for American lazyness, really.) But once you get the news from a doctor, stating that same fact, it's harder to ignore. So, I'm gonna start an exercise regimen. Sadly, I was informed that marathons of playing Tomb Raider aren't exercise... looks like it's the gym for me. Wish me luck.

So, other than drawing pretty pictures, one hobby I love is hunting. I grew up hunting with my father and brother and our dog Zeus. Some of my favorite memories involve a gun, ducks and cold water. Sadly, I now live in Arid-zona. What little huntable water there is, is guarded better than a virgin anus in prison. There isn't the solidarity of hunters I remember from my childhood. I grew up in the Midwest and Colorado, so I can recall telling people that you hunt and they'd suggst areas for you to try. Maybe give you some tips on how the birds work in that area. Not here. Oh, no. I recently joined a forum, placing my hope in the openness of anonmous strangers on the internet to guide me to a place to hunt. HA! People there were quite possibly more guarded than in 'real' life. Or maybe they just didn't like me poking holes in their comfortable republican bubbles. Which brings me to my second hunting dilemma: I'm beginning to see that I'm one of a SMALL minority of liberally minded hunters. Which will close off a lot of avenues for possible hunting partners. Well, that and I can read for myself. I swear these ignorant boobs will spout off any republican rhetoric Rush Limbaugh or GWB feeds them. If they said that the sky is purple today, and the weather calls for a 50% chance of biscuits, they'd run outside with butter and honey. And these people vote. Isn't that frightening? The best argument I read against liberals while on that forum? That they all want to take our guns away. Yeah. You know what? I fell for that line too, when I voted for GWB the first time. But I have since learned my lesson. Politicians, liberal or otherwise, can't take away our right to our precious, precious guns. Since it would have to be an amendment to the bill of Rights, the states would have to ratify it. I doubt that would happen. Oh well, as long as the American people stay afraid of gay people and science, these guys will stay the same uneducated, callow boobs they are.

So, I haven't read any comics recently. I AM SADDENED by this turn of events. A couple of months ago, we decided to give up our online comic subscriptions in exchange for a brick and mortar LCS (local comic shop, for those not in the know). This way I could get my comics weekly instead of monthly, and I'd be able to interact with fellow comic fans at the store. Unfortunately, the shop we chose is run by an absentee boob, and his first in command would give lawyers and used car salesmen a pause, he's so slimy. (Pop Culture Paradise in Tempe, AZ, don't go there.) Ashlie refuses to set foot in there anymore. So, we're in comic limbo. We have quite a few storylines to finish, (Civil War, 52) but can't until we decide on a comic shop. (Aren't my issues fun?) So, no new comics review. Bah.

Here's some new-ish art to share:

These are samples I did for a Universal Studios Monsters sketch card set that's coming out soon. I didn't make it. I've seen some of the samples that did, and I can see why. But damn, it's hard to get into this whole sketch card gig. But, I'm trying. I really thought these turned out well. What do you think, intarwubs?

Well, that's about it for this installment. Join us again next time, as we unravel the secrets of the wonder known as pie.

P.S. See that CafePress link over to the right? No, your other right. Yeah over there. Click it. It takes you to my store Monkey Minion Press. Where you can buy shirts and stuff with my pretty, pretty pictures on them. There will be more designs added as soon as I make them, so keep your eyes peeled.

Peace!
Dane

"War is cruelty. There is no use trying to reform it. The crueler it is, the sooner it will be over."- General Sherman

SPOILER ALERT!!
So, I had a request to do a post about Marvel Comics Civil War Maxi Series. What to say....
The series has jumped the shark. The premise is solid, After a horrible Superpowered disaster in Stamford, CT, the federal Government decides that all Super Powered persons need to register with S.H.E.I.L.D. the world-wide peacekeeping taskforce (think the U.N., but useful). Some heroes (i.e. Iron Man, Reed Richards & Spidey) came out in favor of it, and some went against it and found themselves as outlaws (i.e. Captain America, Falcon & Daredevil). So, the registered heroes have to arrest the "Non-Registered Combatants." (Sounds a bit familiar, hmmm?) Kind of like a 3 year too late analogue of the Patriot Act. It's cool, but would have been cooler 3 years ago... Weeelll, after #4, the series jumped the shark and has revealed itself as a GIANT fanboy masterbation story. If you've ever sat and wondered "Who would win in a fight between Captain America and Iron Man?" this is your story. And that would be fine if that's all that this was. But no, the House of Ideas had this grandiose notion of an intelligent criticism of governmental policies and they have failed. In #3, it was 'revealed' that Thor (who was thought to be dead or in hibernation (huh?)) is back and he's on the registeration side. Okaaay... I couldn't figure out how, since he's not even a US citizen (he's Norse, natch), but I bought it. In #4, Thor is apparently a clone. A... CLONE... I'll let that sink in a minute....

Ok. The last time clones were used as a plot device in comics was in the 90's during the infamous Spider-Man Clone saga. That was majorly bad and led to me dropping comics for about 3 years. Leaving that aside, the clone was made by IronMan and Reed. So, apparently in the Marvel U,which is grounded in "reality", Clones are OK. Super Clones are ok. The fact that medical technology can't produce a viable human clone yet is apparently a non-issue in the 'reality-grounded' Marvel U (let alone cloning a GOD. Think about that, if we can't clone ourselves, how can we clone an organism that's supposedly so far above us? Unless the Cloning a God is a metaphor, and Mark Millar is trying to say that "Man made God, and therefore Man is all-powerful" hmmm...). the fact that GWB is president in the Marvel U and has banninnated all cloning in the US in the 'real' world is apparently not an issue. The fact that superheroes don't clone people for their own ends, because the ends don't justify the means in the hero mindset is NOT AN ISSUE. Marvel has their heroes acting in decidedly un-heroic ways. Iron Man and Reed have taken on the Villanous Mastermind personae in this series, which leads Sue Richards to leave Reed, and take up with the 'rogue' heroes. Oh yeah, and IM and RR have recruited badguys to do their dirty work, too. Murderous bad guys like Venom, Bullseye & Lady Deathstrike to name a few.

So, my opinion is that this series is going down faster than a 2 dollar whore. I hope that they pull up, because they had a really cool premise coming into this and now it's looking like it's gonna be a typical event book. All flash-no substance. If this book has any lasting repercussions, i'd be amazed. i.e. I doubt seriously that Spidey's secret ID stays public. I doubt that Cap stays an outlaw. But we're only 4 issues into a 7 issue miniseries. Maybe they'llpull it off and have us all scratching our heads saying "WTF? That was the best comic series EVAR!!!"

Let's hope.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://dreamindex.blogspot.com/2006/09/war-is-cruelty-there-is-no-use-trying.html' title='"War is cruelty. I'm very happy with how it came out. I was a 'guest coordinator', which meant that I spent the entire time waiting hand and foot on all of the guests in attendance. It was awesome. I got so much one-on-one time with our guests (i.e. Amanda Conner, Jimmy Palmiotti, Josh Middleton, Ron Garney, Armand Villavert, Josh Blaylock, Bret Blevins, Nat Jones and more) that they knew me by name. These are people who see mouth-breathing fanboys on an almost daily basis, but they knew me. and they were all REALLY COOL people. *Geek Moment* It was cool. On Monday morning, I took Ron Garney, Tim Seely and Josh Blaylock to the airport in my car. MY CAR. It was really cool just talking to these guys about normal stuff and not comic stuff (you won't believe the shit we talked about... two words: Werewolf Beavers, 'nuff said).
I didn't get to spend any time at panels, tho. That was sad. :( I got a ton of free sketches and a couple of paid ones. I got a paid one at san diego, too, but these were SOOO much cooler. Maybe I'll scan them and show them off.

Sorry, no new art to show this week, let's see what I can dig out of my photobucke account.

Halloween's just around the corner! Long time, no see, huh? If anyone's still reading this, congratulations, you're more dedicated than I am. :)

Well, Phoenix Comicon is just around the corner. We've been working our asses off on this convention, and I think it's gonna pay off. The past few weeks have been a bit different for me, as I've been designing the program guide exclusively. No meetings, no prizes, nothing. Just the guide. And I gotta say; it's looking damned sweet. I'd hate to brag, but I think it's gonna be one of the best looking program guides out there right now. We've got Mike Mayhew doing our cover, too. So, that's awesome. GET YER TICKETS!!!!

So this past week, Ashlie and I went to the first baseball game I've been to since I was a wee-lad and went to see the Rockies back when they were still at Mile-High Stadium (before Coors Field was built). We went to see the Diamondbacks get stomped by the Padres. It was fun. I'm not into sports really, but even I was getting into it, and yelling at the players, and cheering. I'll post some pics later.

Comics: I love 'em. Wasn't sure if I'd said that yet. Between Ash and I, we get 32 monthly comics. Not including miniseries, and oneshots. So, I figured that if there was anyone who reads this blog who is uninitiated, I'd give a rundown of some of my favorites.

Birds of Prey (DC): This is an awesome book. I originally grabbed it off the stands to show my girlfriend (now wife), to get her into comics. It's a girl comic, what do I (hardcore fanboy from way back) care about a girl comic. WRONG. This is consistently one of the best books out there. Gail Simone writes it, and they've gone through a few artists since we started reading, but it's always damned entertaining. Simone makes you care about these women as she puts them through their paces every month. Good stuff.
Ulitmate Spider-man (Marvel): This book really boils Spider-man down to his essence. It's a well-crafted story, written by master Brian Michael Bendis and drawn by Mark Bagley (who is leaving the title @ issue #110. I'm very sad about this, BTW). Bendis and Bagley have taken Lee and Ditko's seminal creation and truly made it theirs, without completely ruining what makes the character great in the first place.
I'll have more next time. Maybe I can make this a recurring thing? Let me know if you out thar in the internets would like that.

ART TIME!!!!

Waddaya know I have some new art to share!!11!!11!!!!!ELEVEN!!! Woot. So, what to tell ya... This is something I came up with this morning. I kinda like it, and I may make it into a shirt design (if I can ever get the frakatka cafe press thing to work...:(). Everyone say 'HI' to Clucky!

Whoops!

Hey! Sorry about the irregularity of my posts. I've been so busy recently. My wife and I just moved last weekend. Pulled an all-nighter Sunday, and stayed up until midnight on Monday. It is Jeff Smith's Bone. We had to draw a scene featuring 4 or more of the characters from the comic. So, I chose Fone Bone, Bartelby, The Great Red Dragon and Lucius. Pencilled and Inked by yours truly. Maybe some day, I'll color it.

See ya next time!

“When I was a child I was a dreamer. I read comic books, and I was the hero of the comic book. - Elvis Presley

This is gonna be a pretty image-heavy post, so bear with me.

So, San Diego Comicon was last week. What a place! It was like disneyland for geeks. I guess they recorded something like 120,ooo people all 4 days. That's insane. My wife and I headed out Wednesday morning, so we could make it to Preview Night. We handed out flyers and stuff for the Phoenix Comicon, then walked the vendor floor, for a while. Thursday we went back, and walked the floor some more. Give you a hint of how big this place is, if you haven't been; if you stand in the middle of the room, you can't see either end. There's that many booths and people. I got some sweet sketches and autographs (I'll post some up later) from the likes of Neal Adams Comics God (who wasn't doing sketches, but did a quickie for me), Ryan Ottley of Invincible Fame (who also wasn't doing sketches, but did one, and then got Bill Crabtree the colorist on Invincible to color it for me), Koi Turnbull (from Aspen Comics) did me a sweet Black Canary, Frank Cho (Liberty Meadows) did a Truman for me, hell, even Kurt Busiek did me a sketch! I have a few others so here are some thanks: Brandon Peterson, Angel Medina, Josh Middleton, Adam Hughes, J.G. Jones, Ashlie (my wife), Matt Haley, David Mack & LeSean Thomas. Thanks sooo much! You helped make my first con great. We bought alot of stuff, too. Ashlie fell in love with an Adam Hughes limited edition Zatanna print, so we had to get it, a whole mess of comics and trade paperbacks, and I bought a sketch from Scott Kolins. We also got a LOT of free stuff that they were handing out at the different vedor booths. I met in addition to all the people listed above; Jason Gorder Inker Extrodinaire, Jim Lee-Artist of the Gods, and John Romita Sr. SOOO COOL!

On to Pictures: I had just gotten in on Thursday Morning, and Ashlie and I were checking out the Marvel Toys booth. When off to my left I hear a voice say, "Oh. This isn't the Marvel Booth, this is just the Toys." Not just any voice, though. I recognized this voice from years of being a Marvel Zombie. I looked over and did a double take. There was the man responsible for defining the artistic vision of Marvel Comics and comics in general for the better part of the 60's and 70's, John Romita. The man who to this day draws my favorite Spider-Man. I was awestruck. Total geek meltdown. I asked him for a handshake, because that was all my brain could think of at the time. My wife looks at me like I'm retarded, and says ask him for a PICTURE! So, I did. Not a bad start to the first real day of the Con... ;) Thanks, Mr. Romita!

While walking around, I ran into this character. Considering my affinity for all things, Spider-Man, I asked if I could "bug" him for a photo.

I got to the DC booth late, and Jim Lee was wrapping up his shift at the signing table. I asked if he was doing any sketches and he said no, but I asked if I could get a picture, and he said yes! A very cool, if tired man. Thanks, Mr. Lee.

The Convention Center as seen from the Gaslamp district in Downtown San Diego.

A shot of the screens in Hall H, where we waited for 2 hours for Kevin Smith. Unfortunately, I'm stupid, and got the days mixed up, and thought we were gonna meet on Saturday, so Ash and I had already eaten. But we went to this busy little mexican restaurant in Old Town. We had a great time. I can't post the pic because Ash is a little internet-shy, but trust me, we're all smiles and there's a reason. Shelle and Urstwile, were loads of fun!

ART TIME!!!

As this was my first con, I thought I should get a sketchbook to obain autographs, sketches and whatever else I could think of. I posted about the sketches I got up top, but I had the first page left to fill. I thought about getting someone I really admire to do a doodle for it, but there are to many people to get on one little page. So, I did it myself, under the insistence of my loving wife. Here's what I came up with:

Thanks for checking me out. I consider myself creatively maladjusted, so I guess that may be why.

Welcome back! Sorry I haven't posted in a while. I've been *INSANELY* busy of late. Speaking of which; the Phoenix Cactus Comicon is just around the corner. If you live in the southwest and don't come to this, consider yourself on my shit list. We've been working craziness on this con, and it's coming together. I, personally, am in charge of advertising sales and program guide coordination. Which basically means that, I sell ads for the program guide, and then I design the guide. I'm not a very good salesman, sadly, so I don't have very many ads to put in the guide. And the deadline is LOOMING. So, if anyone out there in the internets has a comic, or anime/manga related business, and want to get an ad in for the 'Premiere Pop-Culture Event of the Southwest,' drop me a line, and we'll see what we can work out.

What else? Oh, yeah. Happy *belated* Birthday, America. Tuesday was the 4th of July. Now, I know, I'm a liberal hippie. And I have a major dislike with the way this country is being run. But, I still love this country. It's been going for 230 years, so, let's keep it up, and put someone in office next time that can look beyond their own pockets, when it comes to governing policy. Maybe someone who's a bit... creatively maladjusted?

So, here's art. I haven't had a LOT of time recently, but I managed to pull this one out. It is for a design challenge over at the GDF. I hope you like it.

oh yeah. here's what kind of dog I am.

&lt;a href="http://not-a-real-namespace/http://www.gone2thedogs.com" target="_blank"&gt;gone2thedogs.com&lt;/a&gt;

Anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job. - Douglas Adams

Thanks for coming back. If, indeed, you are coming back. If not, I suppose thanks for coming by. Or not. Whichever the case may warrant. I can't figure out how to use the fershlugginer counters so, I don't know if anyone is reading this at all.

Anywho... So, the president. Yeah. What a douche. Yep, I said douche. Him and his 'New American Century' Cabal. Recently, Mr. Bush made another attempt to pass the Gay Marriage Ban. Probably the worst part of this to me is that, he doesn't even give a shit about gays. It's pure politics. His party needs something to unify the base and since no one likes the war anymore, and running around like Chicken Little, screaming "Terrorism! Jihadists! Muslims! Oh NOES!!!1!1!" isn't doing it. So, he decides that after 2 years of ignoring gay marriage pretty much altogether, let's do that banning thing again. It's bullshit. I'm so tired of these Neo-Con bigots running this country into the ground. It kills me that POLITICIANS are gonna try and govern us by MORALS & RELIGION. Politics, morals & religion are three words that should never EVER go together in the same sentence. Once you start imposing your values and beleifs on other people, you begin a slippery slope towards totalitarian rule.
I guess what really chaps my ass is that people keep placing these people in power. And I don't mean the electorate. I mean the guys with real power. The people that, given the proper motivation, can hand a candidate an election. And no one gives a shit. It just galls me. Thoughts? Opinions? Put 'em down in the comment section.

It's art time!
Well, tomorrow's Father's Day. I'm not a father, but I do have one. So, Dad if you read this, Happy Father's Day. You're ugly, you smell funny, and you're short, but I love ya.
The pic today was gonna be a father's day card for my dad, but I never finished it. Sorry, dad. The character is Monty the Mallard. He was created by my grandfather a long time ago, and now, I've kind of adopted him. Hope you like it.

My work is a game, a very serious game. - M.C. Escher

It's that time again. Thanks for coming back.

Well, it's Saturday, and I'm at work. Judging by some of the posts on the GDF , I'm not the only one. Being a graphic designer & illustrator, I think today's quote holds special meaning. I love my work. I love it so much that it's also one of my hobbies. If I couldn't do design as a job, I'd probably still do it at home. Now, lots of people are designers, and some of them are better at it than I am. Many of them are members of the aforementioned GDF, and the HOW forums. These are two forums that are about the same profession, but are completely different in their ideologies. GDF is a forum that exists to help build up designers, and make them as good as they can be. They do this through constructive criticism and supportive comments. They make one feel like they belong. I like that. HOW, on the other hand, is like the other side of GDF's coin. They are, on the whole, rude, argumentative and snobby. They make it a point to alienate and belittle anyone who sets a virtual foot into their domain. They do this with unconstructive comments, and rudeness, and are very often vulgar and demeaning. This is not to say all the members there are rude, there are a few who are genuinely there to help it seems, but the vocal majority seems content in making themselves feel good at the expense of others. These others are often new designers in or fresh out of college, who may very well be scared off the design field altogether after being lambasted for an (in their eyes) inferior design. Recently, while surfing the HOW forums, I came upon a post ridiculing the website of a friend of mine. The comments were unsolicited, and unconstructive. This man makes money vectorizing logos so that they can be used in many applications. He does not design the logos in question. However, the designers there made no attempt to understand the content of the site, or the owner's intentions. They mocked the design of his site, his business model, and the work. The thread author's own comments pretty much admit to the fact that he was just looking for something to bitch about. Now, there are designers on that site who's work I admire greatly. But it kills me to see them jump in and kick a person when he can't defend himself. That's bullshit. Some people need to be knocked down a few pegs, methinks. Mr. Glitscka, if you ever read this, I'm a great fan of your work and style. You are one of my biggest design influences. But, to do shit like this demeans yourself and the profession you represent. Please consider that when next you decide to pick on someone who is not harming you or your source of income.

I'm posting two pieces today. These are advertisements for O.B. Tampons. When I was out of work, and looking for a job, I was referred to a woman who runs a yarn manufacturing company. After a length review of my portfolio, it was determined that my style was 'too masculine.' However, she decided that she'd give me a chance to prove that I can do a 'feminine style'. So, in lieu of doing up an ad for her company that she might have stolen, I did ads for tampons. In hindsight, they may have been a bit too risqué, but I felt that they deal with a very true to life occurence. Any man who is close with a woman, has had to go to the store to get feminine products. I know I have. And any woman who sends her man out to retreive these products knows the frustration of describing a pink or purple box among the wall of pink and purple boxes. Thus, the idea behind these. O.B.'s boxes are white with a band of color indicating their absorbency. EASY TO FIND. So, here you go.

On an unrealted note, the U.S. House of Representatives is trying to take away your right to see this and anything else on the internet. The big 25. Yippee. So far, it's a bit underwhelming. I'm a quarter of a century old, and I just feel tired and worn out. Like a piece of cloth thats been stretched really tight and rubbed against some rocks.

It's days like this when you notice how alone you are. My wife & I moved to Tempe in January of 2005. Last year's birthday came & went with very little fuss. My wife took me out to dinner and got me a gift (an awesome one, btw. Thanks again, Babe). My coworkers at the time didn't care, but that was alright because I didn't like them anyway. My family didn't call. My friend's from back home didn't call. But, I had my wife (who spent my birthday arguing with the Cingular wireless customer service rep.), and that was enough.

For some reason, I expected this year to be different. My wife wished me Happy Birthday this morning as I was getting ready for work. My friends at graphicdesignforum.com started a thread doing the same. I appreciate it. But, once again, no calls from friends or family.

Maybe I'm just being a crybaby. Maybe I should bite the bullet and grow the fuck up. But screw that. I spent too many years trying to regain some childhood. I grew up too fuckin' fast to wanna spend anymore time as an adult than I absolutely have to. I want my present, my card, my cake and my Chuck'E Cheese's party, Goddamn it! Is that too much to ask?

Alright. Pity party off.

This week, I started a cafepress shop called Monkey Minion Press (cafepress.com/monkeyminionprs) There's nothing there yet, but there will be soon. Keep an eye open. This illustration will be the inaugural design. So far, people seem to like the bottom one best, so that'll be the one to be printed. I may use the other as a poster or something at some point.

End Transmission. I like it so far. It's a little Kodak Easyshare, nothing fancy. But, it does take nice pictures. So, I figured I'd share.
Here are some pictures that I shot while at the Phoenix Zoo.

Prairie Dogs! When I was growing up in Colorado, these little guys were everywhere. This was shot by my wife, Ashlie. It's always amused me that animals from the same ecological area will look similar in their plumage. This bird has very similar markings as the roadrunner, another North American desert bird. Evolution in progress, I suppose.

This Cheetah was fun. I'm not much of a writer, (being a visual artist by trade and hobby) so usually, there probably won't be much here for you to read.
